Craig Fleming of beachmusic45.com
How many of you remember the national music publication Cashbox Magazine? I'm sure many of you do. For those of you who don't, Cashbox Magazine was a weekly national music publication that was published from July 1942 through November 1996; a span of 54 years! Over the span of those 54 years, Cashbox became a staple in the music industry and the good news; it’s back! The new owners of Cashbox have an aggressive plan to return this American classic to the status it enjoyed during its 54 year run. So, what does this have to do with Beach Music? Well, I'm glad you asked.

I am pleased to announce that Cashbox Magazine has agreed to publish the official Top 20 Beach Music Singles chart as provided to them by Beachmusic45.com. The Top 20 Beach Music Singles chart will be published on a monthly basis and will be provided to Cashbox Magazine each month after the Smokin' 45 is compiled. Cashbox has agreed to publish the Top 20 singles for now, but may at a later date publish the entire Smokin' 45. They have also agreed to publish CD reviews as provided by Beachmusic45 and Neal "Soul Dog" Furr.

Why is this important to Beach Music? I think the answers are obvious; but it allows Beach Music to reach people who may not be familiar with our genre of music, as well as placing our chart alongside the Top Popular Singles, Top Popular Albums, Top R&B Singles, Top R&B Albums, Top Country Singles, and Top Country Album charts; as well as all of the other charts Cashbox publishes. It also gets Beach Music in a national publication; which will be a benefit to all of us; and should go a long way toward helping Beach Music get that ever so coveted category at the Grammy Awards.

At the present time, Cashbox is only operating online; but has an aggressive plan to be publishing a print magazine on a Bi-Weekly basis by the end of this year. To visit their website, visit www.cashboxmagazine.com and select the Charts option and you will go to the charts page where you will see all of the charts that Cashbox publishes. The Beach Music Singles chart is located in the Monthly Charts section. If you want to go directly to the Top Beach Music Singles chart, visit www.cashboxmagazine.com/dispmthsing.aspx?id=120&time=16

When you get to the Beach Music Singles chart page, you can click on the artist name and it will bring up a bio and picture of the artist; again more exposure for the artists of our music. A couple of things to note about the chart: The months on chart, last month, and peak position are based upon the Cashbox chart; not the amount of time or peak on The Smokin' 45. Also, the discography section of the artists bio is just the discography of the albums associated with the songs that have appeared on Cashbox; not the entire artist discography.

As I mentioned earlier, Cashbox has also agreed to publish reviews of our music as provided by Neal "Soul Dog" Furr. The first two reviews submitted, as selected by the President and CEO of Cashbox, are reviews of Jim Quick and Coastlines new CD "Sneakin Out Back" and Rickey Godfrey's CD "Once In A Lifetime Love". To view these reviews, go to the reviews page of the website; at the top of the page you can select a genre to view; select "Beach Music" and you will be taken directly to the Rickey Godfrey review; scroll down a few reviews and you will see the Jim Quick and Coastline review.

Cashbox also rotates their magazine covers; and as you can see in the picture above, Mighty Mike Schermer graced the cover of Cashbox on March 12th of this year, along with Nelly Furtado; not bad company to share a cover with!

I have waited to make this announcement because there were a few bugs to be worked out with Cashbox, but as of today, most of those have been corrected and Beach Music is an integral part of the Cashbox family. I hope all of you are as excited about this as I am. This is a tremendous opportunity for our music, and a big step toward gaining our music the national attention it deserves!

Regards,

Craig Fleming

Bill Ballard, Songwriter and Pilot 2/7/07
If you're heading up I-77 from Charlotte toward Lake Norman, Take a few turns and backroads to find a lake front home of a true song loving songwriter. Tucked back up in the trees is a  beautiful setting with the boat dock loaded and ready to go, a couple of interesting birds and lazy dog laying at the front door. The perfect place for a man to think and let it all sink in. Just exactly where you would expect to find a deep thinking, fun loving guy.
It reminds me of the time I met Mickey Spalaine at his home in Murrells Inlet, SC back in the early 70's. The perfect place he said for a writer to be.
Bill Ballard is the man who wrote "Shaggin' Man" for The Fabulous Shades as well many other songs. Just to name a few, "Ocean Drive Sunday" which has been steady on the Beach music charts for over a year now,  Highway #9 Blues recorded and being aired on the west coast now, A new song that The Fabulous Shades hope to release soon called "I'm Yours Tonight", "On The Beach Tonight", "Greatest Of Heros" which has been put in the hands of some credible Country music folks and many others yet to come. Bill has a passion for good lyrics and putting a story line in each song. His inspiration comes in part from his friend Neil Diamond which he has know for many years in his job as a pilot for Neil and other artist such as, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Ronnie Tutt (Elvis' drummer for many years), Sarah Jessica Parker, Bobby Allison just to name a few and is currently the pilot also for Rousch Racing out of Lake Norman, NC. Bill has a ton of interesting stories and photos to match of these adventures and is always writing day and night rather in his studio or in the air somewhere. He is consistanly getting advice from Neil and his band and studio musicians on his work and strives to put more hit songs out there for the public to hear. He has fallen head over hills for the whole Beach Music business and loves the great attention he has received to this point. We are very pleased to have the pleasure to know and work with him. Bill was introduced to us by Harriett Grady Thomas at the one20inc., Judy's House Of Oldies release party at Fat Harold's just after we had done our debuts of "I Wanna Be At The Beach" and "Never Ending". Harriett said "I want you to meet this man, He loved your songs and would like for you to hear some of his songs" Since then we have recorded one and are currently working three more. It has been awesome working with Bill and we look forward to seeing him become one of the premier songwriters in the business in the years to come. Keep your ear to the ground and you might just hear ole' Bill rolling down highway #9 in his '55 Chevy!

IN THE STUDIO WORKING ON  "Made In The Shade" PROJECT
The Fabulous Shades are hanging out at Mountain Rock Music Studios quite a bit lately where we look forward to the release of "Made In The Shade" featuring the pre-release of "Shaggin' Man" already receiving great attention and airplay on all the major Beach, Boogie, Rhythym and Blues stations across the region. Larry Pope is again our engineer for this project and who's going to argue with that sucess! The first project out of his studio for The Fabulous Shades was "I Wanna Be At The Beach" and with 10 out of 10 songs off the project receiving airplay and 6 of the 10 songs charting! Well all we can say is thanks, Larry!!  With that being said, I think it is obvious that we just look forward to another stellar project coming soon!  Look for it on Mike Farver's one20inc. label to be coming out sometime in the spring of 2007.

LARRY POPE WITH MOUNTAINROCK MUSIC STUDIOS RECEIVES GUITAR FROM TFS
In the summer of 2005, The Fabulous Shades presented Larry Pope, Owner/Engineer of MountainRock Studio with an autograghed electric guitar to display in his studio for his dedication and extra hard work on The "I Wanna Be At The Beach" 10 song project. Everyone who worked on the project signed the instrument for Larry. The Shades were playing at Andrews in Anderson, SC and invited Larry to be their special guest to present him with the guitar. There was a nice crowd there to cheer Larry on for his efforts and the sucess of the project. The project was released April 29, 2004 at the one20inc. Release Party at Fat Harold's in N. Myrtle Beach and has received rave reviews from across the board from some of the most prestigious DJ's in the business. 10 out of 10 songs have received airplay and 6 of the songs have charted. The title cut reaching as high #1 on some independent DJ charts. Larry Pope is one of the most special and nicest people in this business and deserves for everyone in Beach Music to know.
